Central Historic District Walking Tour

524 Fourth Street
Carnegie Library

The Carnegie Library was designed in 1914 by Grant C. Miller of Chicago. Miller, who with Normand Patton designed more than one hundred “Carnegies” in the Midwest, worked alone on this structure. Faced with red brick and stucco, it is a typical Carnegie design – one story, rectangular, with a hipped roof and raised basement. The stucco, red tile roof and Tudor style entrance give it uniqueness. The City has carefully preserved the integrity of the building, which became the Community Cultural Center in 1976. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on May 7, 1980.
